The sword-slash/soul-collect gameplay adds something new to the Resident Evil series. It's also a new kind of reward system that works well. There are also some puzzles littered along the path to give you a nice break from the fighting, and to give some variety to the gameplay.

Good artistic style. The subtle background noises, the detailed medieval Japan theme, the camera angles that enhance it.

The cutscenes are intersperced within the gameplay pretty well, giving the player a little bit more of the story as he goes along (they aren't too far apart). Except for the introductory cutscene, the cutscenes aren't too long.

The landscapes vary as you go through the game - grassy forests, bridges, inside temples and castles, up stairways, across rivers, into caves and so on.

Samanosuke, the main character, lives for himself and is in control of his own destiny. It's very liberating to be somebody like that. More gratification for the player.

The antagonist is the extremely intelligent and arrogant High Class Demon that is responsible for creating the evil demon civilization, which was built upon greed and ambition. The protagonist, Samanosuke, is a free-spirited traveller who has been to many lands and is fasinated with all of the wonders of life. He is also very calm, rational, and embarks on his quest for the aid of others (rescuing Princess Yuki). This is a basic reflection of the good/evil aspect of human behavior. Any person can connect the that situation.

Princess Yuki wishes she could see the world with Samanosuke, but she's not allowed to because she's the princess. This is a secondary theme of the grass is always greener, but it is kind of contrived.

The controls are awkward at first. The use of the D-Pad seems outdated. They should have taken advantage of the analog stick and made it more intuitive and easier to use.

The game is too linear. There should be some side pockets and optional areas to explore where you might be able to find some extra power-ups, and the order in which you do things should be more selectable.

The still picture backgrounds are kind of boring. More cool things should be happening in the environment around me. The graphics, even with XBOX enhancements, aren't that great. They were great when the original PlayStation 2 version came out, but not now. The sound also could've done a better job of bringing realism and drama to the environment. In most Resident Evil games there are zombies and monsters constantly jumping at you to shock and startle you, but in Onimusha they appear more subtly. Sudden is more exciting, subtle is more boring.

There isn't enough story happening in the game. I don't feel as though I'm part of a story. I feel more like I'm just wandering around medieval Japan hacking and slashing at monsters. The little story that is there is kind of boring.

The ususal problems with Resident Evil: obscuring cameras, rotate/go forward controls, etc.

This is another game where you must fight and endless army of monsters for some strange, often unknown reason. The story is only there some of the time, and the gameplay doesn't relate to the story very well. Samanosuke admits himself that all this fighting is pointless, yet you spend the entire game doing it, refining your skills to become a more powerful fighter.
