How can I prepare myself to get into DigiPen?

This is the most frequently asked question, so it's going up here first.  If you are asking this question, I will assume that you are between the ages of 8 and 16, and are wondering exactly what you will need to do for the next 2-10 years to get into DigiPen.  Here's my standard response:

Make sure DigiPen is what you want to do.  Immense amounts of work are required of each student, and many students reach their breaking point before they reach graduation.  Even though this school is geared toward making games, you should not expect to be able to play games while you are in this school.  The classes, projects, and homework are too much of a time drain to leave extra time.  That's the simple truth.

Also, make sure that you can handle DigiPen.  The cost of the school are average for a private university, but the fact that you won't be able to have a steady job while attending DigiPen makes every dollar count.  You should be prepared to come out of DigiPen with a large amount of debt, and be prepared to take the loans necessary to make it through.  You will be at school between 10 and 13 hours every day, so you should also expect to have very little social life.

Now that you've thought about whether you can handle DigiPen, I'll help you figure out what you need to do to get in.  First of all, DigiPen's application is kinda goofy since it doesn't ask a whole lot about who you are, but mostly about your academic history.  You'll want to make sure that this looks good, obviously, so you don't want to fail your classes.  The classes they like to see high grades in are math, physics, and computer science.  I would recommend taking math up through Calculus level, which will probably mean math for all 4 years of your high school career.  Computer Science isn't as important, but you might consider taking a class or two in programming to make sure that you like it.  Physics is also nice to see, since a lot of games require some amount of physics.

Obviously, the last thing you need to do to prepare to get into DigiPen is to apply. ;-)

How hard is it to get into DigiPen?

I always have a problem answering this question, since I don't really have a whole lot of experience with it and it has changed since I applied and was accepted.  I'll still try to do my best.

I understand that a large number of people apply each year.  There is no minimum number of students who are accepted, so if one year they don't get enough qualified applicants, they will just start a smaller class.  The usual size of the starting class is 120, and the usual size of the graduating class is 8.  That means that 1 in 15 students graduate.  In any case, that's not exactly the important thing in this question.

I got in on my first try.  I had a 3.6 out of 4.0 in High School, and I had taken math up through Calculus.  I didn't take any physics courses, but I had 3 years of Computer Science behind me as well.  Since the application is so vague in finding out info about you, the reference letters are also a great place to show who you are.  You want to make sure that you get good reference letters, since they are the biggest thing that the registrar will look at.

I saw your resume, and if you know HTML, why do you have to use Frontpage?

Why do people use calculators to find square roots of very large numbers?

Why do people drive cars to work instead of running?

Why do people leave the bathroom without washing their hands?

It's faster.  It's easier.  Sure, I could do it the other way, but why use my precious time to make something by hand when I can do it quickly in Frontpage and modify what I need to?
